Iraqi Kurdistan Region; Islamic Republic Drone Attacks on Political Refugee Camps in “Azadi” and “Surdash”

April 27, 2026; While the military conflict between the United States-Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran is in its nineteenth day of ceasefire, the wave of drone attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran on the headquarters and political refugee camps of Kurdish parties in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region continues. In the latest instance, the political refugee camps of the “Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan” and the “Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan” have been targeted.

On the afternoon of Monday, April 27, 2026, the “Azadi” camp for political refugees of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, located in the District of “Koye” within the Province of Erbil, and the “Surdash” camp for political refugees of the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan in the Province of Sulaymaniyah, located in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, were targeted by suicide drone attacks of the Islamic Republic. As a result of these attacks, the reservoir and piping network of the “Surdash” camp burst and sustained damage.

These attacks are carried out on these camps while families, including women and children of political refugees, reside there. Since the beginning of the war and the targeting of these camps, hundreds of refugee families have been forced to leave their homes, and significant damage has been inflicted on houses, hospitals, cultural centers, and schools.

According to statistics, from February 28, 2026, to April 27, 2026, more than 811 missile and drone attacks have been carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxy groups against the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. As a result, at least 20 people, including 7 Peshmerga of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, one Asayish employee, 9 Peshmerga of Iranian Kurdish parties, 3 civilians, and one French soldier, have lost their lives, and at least 123 people have been injured. Erbil with 478 cases, Sulaymaniyah and Halabja with 236 cases, Soran with 68 cases, and Duhok with 29 cases have been the targets of these attacks.
