Military Drill Responsible for Wildfires in Mariwn

Kurdpa: Iranian military manoeuvres set wild forests on fire in Zagros Mountains in Mariwan, Eastern Kurdistan.

Kurdpa News Agency has learned that on August 17, Division 328 of the Iranian military forces of Islamic Republic of Iran conducted a military maneuver near the town of Mariwan in Eastern Kurdistan and consequently, Kani Quljan forests, 15 kilometer north-west of Mariwan, were set on fire.

Following the fire, several hectares of forests were destroyed. During recent years the region has continuously suffered the effect of man-made fires.

This particular fire was contained by the Crisis Committee of the non-governmental Chiya Green Association, only returning to rage again the next day.

Continued damage to forests in the region have prompted environmental activists from the cities of Mariwan, Paveh, Sina, Ilam, Salasi Bawajani and Jowanro to get together in Mariwan to share views and discuss potential solutions.

Centers and associations for environment protection have issued an announcement about the crisis of repeated fires in Zagros mountain forests.

Volunteers and green peace activists in the Kurdish areas of Iran have been battling forest fires caused by neglect, dry and hot season and as well militarized activities causing extensive damages to East Kurdistan’s wild habitat.

The Kurdish areas of Iran are among the most poorest and deprived areas of Iran. Many complain that in case of any dissent or protests, thousands of troops are fast mobilized to react; however, little or no investment and infrastructure are put in place to deal with natural disasters such as the wildfires.
