Mahabad Prison; Special Guard attack and firing of tear gas at the prisoners' protest; Two wounded, reduction in food rations, and a call for help from the prisoners
March 4, 2026; In recent days, simultaneously with the military conflict between Israel-USA and the Islamic Republic of Iran and the targeting of one of the “Basij” centers affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps near the prison of the city of “Mahabad,” the prisoners of this prison have protested against being held in war conditions and the threat to their lives. These protests were met with an attack by the prison's Special Guard and the repeated firing of tear gas, resulting in at least two prisoners being wounded. Reports also indicate a reduction in food meals to one meal per day and the disconnection or restriction of telephone communication.
An informed source, while confirming this news, told “Kurdpa”: Since Monday, March 2, 2026, and simultaneously with the attack on one of the “Basij” centers near the prison, the prisoners have protested several times regarding their situation and the risks resulting from attacks around the prison, but each time they faced the intervention of the Special Guard and the firing of tear gas, which led to the wounding of two individuals.
According to this source, the prisoners are under severe pressure and have been targeted by tear gas several times so far. In addition, food meals have been reduced to one meal per day. Due to repeated attacks on military centers near the prison, the prisoners consider themselves to be in serious danger and have made an urgent request for help. At the same time, prison telephone calls have been disconnected or restricted, and families have visited the prison due to intense concern. Prison officials informed the families that “the status of the prisoners is being reviewed specially,” and some prisoners have been temporarily released on bail or sent on leave; however, three days after the start of attacks near the prison, the overall situation of the prisoners is still reported as uncertain.
According to the informed source of “Kurdpa,” currently, about 350 prisoners are held in the prison of the city of “Mahabad,” of which 110 are political prisoners, and all have demanded immediate attention and special support.
