Ashkhaneh; Adel Raeis Ghanavati, Kurmanji Kurd and January detainee, sentenced to 9 months in prison in criminal case

July 26, 2026; "Adel Raeis Ghanavati," a young Kurmanji Kurd from the city of Ashkhaneh in North Khorasan Province who was arbitrarily detained for two months during the January 2026 protests, was recently sentenced to 9 months of discretionary imprisonment by a branch of the Criminal Court of the city of Ashkhaneh.

An informed source, confirming this news, told Kurdpa: "Adel Raeis Ghanavati" has two cases in the Criminal and Revolutionary Courts. Recently, in June 2026, the verdict for his Criminal Court case was issued on charges of "clashing with government officers," and he was sentenced to 9 months of discretionary imprisonment. He has submitted to the verdict regarding this sentence. Additionally, according to this source, in the Revolutionary Court case, he has been informed that several years of imprisonment will be issued for him, but the final verdict for this case has not yet been issued.

"Adel Raeis Ghanavati" was arrested on January 24, 2026, without a judicial warrant by security forces and transferred to an unknown location. According to this source, after some time, through phone calls with his family, he stated that he was being held in the quarantine section of Bojnurd Prison. After two months of arbitrary detention, he was temporarily released on bail in late May 2026.

During the period of arbitrary detention, this Kurdish citizen was deprived of the right to access a lawyer and to have visits with his family.
