February 25, 2026; “Babak Karimi,” a former political prisoner from the city of “Eyvan-e Gharb” in “Ilam” Province, who had been sentenced to 4 years, 9 months, and one day of discretionary imprisonment during the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” protests, has been summoned to the First Branch of the Interrogation Unit of the Public and Revolutionary Court of “Ilam” during recent days in connection with the popular protests of January 2026 with four charges.
According to a summons dated February 23, 2026, which has reached “Kurdpa,” he has been summoned to the First Branch of the Interrogation Unit of the Public and Revolutionary Court of “Ilam” to defend against the charges of “seducing or inciting people to war and killing one another with the intent to disrupt the national security of the country,” “propaganda against the state,” “spreading falsehoods,” and “illegal gathering,” and must appear at this branch within five days.
Background of detention in Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
“Babak Karimi” was detained on September 21, 2022, during the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” revolutionary uprising in the city of “Eyvan-e Gharb,” and was temporarily released from the Central Prison of “Ilam” on February 6, 2023, by posting a bail of two billion Tomans. During his detention, he went on a hunger strike twice in protest against the extension of his temporary detention and the lack of investigation into his case.
On July 3, 2023, he was sentenced by the Second Branch of the Revolutionary Court of “Ilam” to 5 years of imprisonment on the charge of “assembly and collusion with the intent to disrupt internal security,” 2 years of imprisonment for “insulting the leader of the Iranian government,” and 2 years of imprisonment for “insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
This sentence was reduced to 4 years, 9 months, and one day of discretionary imprisonment on September 13, 2025, by the Second Branch of the Court of Appeals of “Ilam” Province and became final.
Also, on August 22, 2023, he was summoned to Branch 101 of the Criminal Court Two of the city of “Eyvan-e Gharb” in another case on the charge of “disrupting public order and peace” and, according to the notice, was obliged to appear in court on August 27, 2023, to defend himself.
