Urmia; Death Sentences of Five Detainees of the 2022 Protests Overturned by the Supreme Court

The death sentences of Pejman Soltani, Rozgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, Ali (Suran) Ghassemi, Kaveh Salehi, and Teyfour Salimi Babamiri, who were detainees of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" revolutionary uprising, have been overturned by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court.

According to an informed source speaking to Kurpa, the case of these five Kurdish political prisoners has been referred back to the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad for retrial. This ruling was officially notified to their families on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Last week, Branch 1 of the Criminal Court One of West Azerbaijan Province also acquitted these five detainees of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" revolutionary uprising of the charge of "financing terrorism through the preparation and distribution of medicine."

In July 2025, Pejman Soltani, Rozgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, Ali (Suran) Ghassemi, Kaveh Salehi, and Teyfour Salimi Babamiri were sentenced to death, imprisonment, and fines by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Urmia, presided over by Judge "Reza Najafzadeh" and Counselor "Esmaeil Bazrkari."

Previously, Pejman Soltani had been sentenced to death on the charge of "premeditated murder" by Branch 1 of the Criminal Court Special for Juveniles of West Azerbaijan Province. Furthermore, Rozgar Beigzadeh Babamiri and Ali (Suran) Ghassemi were sentenced to 15 years and 10 years and one day of executory imprisonment, respectively, on the charge of "complicity in murder." Kaveh Salehi, another defendant in this case, was acquitted of the charges brought against him.

The court session to hear the charges against these political prisoners was held on December 29, 2024, in Branch 1 of the Criminal Court Special for Juveniles of West Azerbaijan Province, and the verdict was notified to them in Urmia Central Prison on January 16, 2025.

On April 15, 2023, Ali (Suran) Ghassemi, son of Nasser; Pejman Soltani, son of Abdullah; and Kaveh Salehi, son of Ahmad, were arrested by security forces at their private residences without the presentation of a judicial warrant and were transferred to the Urmia Intelligence Administration detention center for interrogation.

Rozgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, son of Salaho-d-Din, was also arrested by security forces on April 17, 2023, without the presentation of a judicial warrant. Additionally, Teyfour Salimi Babamiri had been arrested by security forces in Baneh in March 2023 without the presentation of a judicial warrant.

These five Kurdish citizens were subjected to severe physical and psychological torture for several months in the Urmia Intelligence Administration detention center to extract forced confessions and were transferred to Urmia Central Prison following the completion of the interrogation phases.
