Supreme Court Rejects Mashallah Karami’s Request for Retrial for the Second Time

For the second time, the Supreme Court of Iran has rejected a retrial request for Mashallah Karami, the father of Mohammad Mehdi (Kumar) Karami, a protester executed during the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi revolutionary uprising.
Shahla Orouji, Mr. Karami’s attorney, announced the news on her personal page on the social media platform X, writing:
“The second retrial request for my client, Mashallah Karami, has been rejected just like the first.”
In January 2025, the first retrial request for this political prisoner was also denied by the Supreme Court.
Following the consolidation of sentences in two separate cases, Mr. Karami’s total prison sentence has been reduced to three years and seven months.
Previously, Branch 102 of the Criminal Court Two in Nazarabad, Karaj, sentenced Mashallah Karami to a combined total of eight years and ten months in prison, a fine of 1.92 billion tomans, and confiscation of assets on charges of “acquiring illicit wealth” and “complicity in money laundering”. This verdict was formally delivered to Mr. Karami and his legal team on Saturday, August 18, 2024.
The court session regarding these charges had been held in April 2025 at Branch 102 of the Criminal Court Two in Nazarabad, Karaj.
In a separate case, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj sentenced him to:
Five years in prison on the charge of “assembly and collusion with intent to act against national security”, and
One year in prison for “propaganda against the regime.”
This ruling was formally communicated to Mr. Karami in prison on Monday, May 20, 2025.
The hearing for this case was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2025, at Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj, during which the court refused to grant his release on bail or convert his temporary detention order.
On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, Mashallah Karami was arrested by security forces. During his arrest, all of the family’s electronic devices were confiscated, and their bank cards were blocked.
On October 28, 2023, he was transferred from the Intelligence Department’s detention center to the Central Detention Facility in Karaj, where, after three months in quarantine, he was moved to Ward 15.
