The death sentence of Naser Bakrzadeh overturned by Branch 39 of Iran’s Supreme Court

On April 14, 2025, the death sentence of Naser Bakrzadeh, a Kurdish prisoner held at Urmia Central Prison, was overturned during the appeals process by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court of Iran.

Amir Raeesian, Mr. Bakrzadeh’s lawyer, shared the news on social media, writing: 

“This ruling was delivered today to me and my colleagues, Seyedad Shirzad and Nihad Irandoost, and we are now awaiting the transfer of the case to another branch of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia for a retrial at an equivalent level.”

In November 2023, Naser Bakrzadeh, was sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court on charges of espionage for Israel.

The court session reviewing the charges against Mr. Bakrzadeh was held on November 3, 2023, during which he was convicted and sentenced to death for espionage for Israel.

This 25-year-old Kurdish citizen was initially arrested on August 9, 2023, by security forces. After several weeks of interrogation, he was temporarily released upon signing a written pledge.

He was rearrested on January 2, 2024, by security agents and, after several months of interrogation at the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center in Al-Mahdi Garrison, was transferred to Urmia Central Prison.
