Ashkhaneh; Mohammadamin Eskandari, Kurmanji Kurd Detained in January, Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison

August 2, 2026 – "Mohammadamin Eskandari," a 24-year-old Kurmanji Kurd citizen from Ashkhaneh in North Khorasan Province who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, was recently sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Bojnurd County to 2 years of discretionary imprisonment.

An informed source, confirming this news, told Kurdpa: "Mohammadamin Eskandari" was sentenced by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court of Bojnurd County on charges of "propaganda against the system" and "assembly and collusion against internal and external security" to 2 years of discretionary imprisonment. This verdict was verbally communicated to him in early August 2026.

According to this source, this Kurdish citizen was deprived of the right to have a lawyer throughout all stages of the proceedings; he was neither allowed to choose a lawyer of his own preference nor did the court appoint a public defender for him. Consequently, the proceedings were conducted without the presence of a lawyer, and he was also warned that if he appealed the verdict, he would face an increased sentence.

In late January 2026, one to two weeks after the protests of January 8 and 9, "Mohammadamin Eskandari" was arrested without a judicial warrant following several raids by security forces on his family home and transferred to an unknown location. After three days of detention in an unknown location, which according to this source involved severe physical torture and interrogation, he was transferred to Bojnurd Prison, and after 15 days of detention, he was temporarily released on bail in mid-February 2026.

Throughout the entire period of arbitrary detention, this Kurdish citizen was deprived of the right to access a lawyer, family visits, and phone calls.
