Iraqi Kurdistan: Bases of Two Kurdish Parties Targeted by 6 Missile and Suicide Drone Attacks

21:30 - 23 May 2026

Saturday evening, May 23, 2026; In the continuation of the Islamic Republic of Iran's attacks on Kurdish parties in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the bases of the Komala Party of Toilers of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) were targeted by 6 drone and missile attacks. This comes as military attacks had otherwise halted during a 45-day ceasefire in the military conflict between Israel, the United States, and the Islamic Republic of Iran; however, the camps and bases of Kurdish parties have been among the few locations that continue to be repeatedly targeted.

According to reports from the media outlets of these Kurdish parties, on Saturday evening, May 23, 2026, the base of the Komala Party of Toilers of Kurdistan in the "Alana" valley was targeted by two suicide drones, and the "Chashmir" base of the Kurdistan Freedom Party in "Darashakran" was targeted by 4 missiles. These locations are situated in areas of the Erbil province in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Based on published statistics, from February 28, 2026, to May 23, 2026, more than 829 instances of missile and drone attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran and its affiliated proxy groups against the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have been recorded. As a result of these attacks, at least 20 people—including 7 Iraqi Kurdistan Peshmerga forces, one member of the Asayish forces, 9 Peshmerga members of Iranian Kurdish parties, 3 civilians, and one French soldier—have lost their lives, and at least 125 others have been wounded.

Amidst this, the bases and refugee camps of political dissidents from Kurdish opposition parties opposed to the Islamic Republic have been the primary targets of these attacks; particularly camps where the families, women, and children of these parties' members reside. Furthermore, service and public centers, including hospitals, libraries, schools, and civil institutions active within these camps, have also been targeted by the missile and drone attacks.
