A Kurdish journalist sentenced to one year imprisonment

Kurdistan Press Agency (Kurdpa): Ilam Revolutionary Court sentenced a Kurdish journalist, from Ilam, to one year imprisonment.

Najaf Mehdipour is the director and license holder of a right-now-suspended biweekly newspaper called Bakhtar Zamin.

He was summoned to the court and informed of his conviction on Tuesday, September 4.

Ilam Revolutionary Court sentenced him on charge of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran and assaulting the Leader”. He was informed that he would be able to appeal against the sentence.

The publication of Bakhtar Zamin was suspended due to printing some articles criticizing top officials with regard to violating human rights and Iran’s aggressive foreign policy.

Najaf Mehdipour holds a Master in Political Science; He tried to stand as a candidate for the tenth elections of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, but his eligibility was not approved by the Iran\'s Guardians\' Council due to “lack of belief and commitment to Islam and the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
