Banking Disruption Following Hack; Government Claims Issue Resolved while Reports Indicate Continued Outages
June 24, 2026; While the Central Bank's media outlet had announced the resolution of banking disruptions, particularly in Bank Melli, Bank Saderat, and Bank Tejarat by the end of June 22, 2026, and Fars News Agency also wrote on June 23, 2026, quoting banking network data, that the disruptions of all banks had been resolved, citizen reports continue to indicate the persistence of a significant portion of these outages.
On June 23, 2026, Fars News Agency, quoting data from the banking network's monitoring room, wrote: “All banks, including Melli, Saderat, and Tejarat, have returned to the service cycle, and the status of providing banking services has been stable since this morning,” and only a minor issue remains in Bank Melli. This is while even in the user comments section below this report, a number of citizens have reported the continuation of banking disruptions. Furthermore, reports received by Kurdpa on June 23 show that only a small portion of the disruptions have been resolved.
Reports received by Kurdpa from some cities in Kurdistan in recent days indicated that the services of Bank Melli, Saderat, Tejarat, Sepah, and Mellat had completely broken down, and customers of these banks had no access to their money and accounts. On June 22, Bank Mellat and Bank Keshavarzi were also added to the list of banks experiencing disruptions.
These individuals reported to Kurdpa that the government has so far failed to provide a solution to this problem, and no clear information has been given regarding the time for the complete resolution of the disruptions. According to them, a significant portion of depositors and capital owners have become worried, and trust in government banks has severely declined. Some also believe that even during the recent war, the situation was not as complex as the current conditions, and society had not felt the crisis to this extent.
Citizens have also reported that many POS (point-of-sale) terminals faced disruptions, and when paying via bank card, fund transfer was impossible. This situation began on June 14, 2026, and continued until the end of Tuesday, June 22, 2026. According to them, the cards of Bank Melli, Saderat, and Tejarat were practically unusable during a major part of this period, and using them in POS terminals faced problems.
According to these sources, the issue of banking disruptions has turned into a serious dilemma for citizens, and many people are left in limbo. Since the bulk of people's assets is kept in bank accounts and the amount of cash in circulation is limited, concerns regarding the continuation of this situation have increased. Furthermore, given the upcoming holidays and the arrival of the weekend, many citizens are not optimistic about a quick resolution to these problems.
Kurdpa had previously received reports on June 14, 2026, that since 7:00 AM on that day, Bank Melli, Bank Tejarat, and Bank Saderat had faced disruptions and their systems were unable to provide services. Moreover, mobile banking applications had also broken down. According to citizens, these problems continued until June 22, 2026, and they were unable to use their accounts. Citizens also reported on June 23 that only a portion of these problems has been resolved.
In this connection, a number of citizens had received messages from banks stating that “the technical disruption is under review and troubleshooting.”
Previously, on June 19, 2026, Mizan News Agency, by publishing an announcement from the Central Bank, confirmed the occurrence of a cyberattack on four banks and wrote: “Following the disruptions that occurred in Bank Melli, Saderat, Tejarat, and the Export Development Bank, this disruption was created as a result of a cyberattack on the communication infrastructures of these banks.”
Also, Fars News Agency announced on the evening of Tuesday, June 22, 2026, quoting the Central Bank's media, that the disruptions would be resolved by the end of that same night and wrote: “The card-based service disruptions of all banks except Bank Melli, Saderat, and Tejarat have been resolved and their services have returned to normal.” This is while Bank Melli Iran had previously, on June 18, 2026, reported the “gradual return of Bank Melli Iran's services following the technical disruption” and announced that “the key services of this bank have become accessible to customers again after resolving the technical and infrastructural problems.”
In this regard, Fars News Agency, on June 22, 2026, in a report titled “Bank Hack in Calm Days, the Unfulfilled Nightmare of War,” linked these cyberattacks to the policy of cutting off the internet during the recent war and wrote: “This cyberattack, which has been confirmed by experts, has revived the question that if such an event had occurred during wartime, what consequences would it have brought for the country?” This news agency had also written: “The widespread disruptions in the systems of several large banks in the country over recent days not only faced the process of providing services to customers with a serious challenge, but due to the dependence of the fuel system on some of these banks, it also brought about a wave of overcrowding in gas stations.”
At the same time, some citizens have reported in recent days that Health Insurance services for families who are not covered by other government insurances have also faced disruptions during recent days. According to them, in some cases, it was not possible to use insurance services, receive medication, or benefit from medical services.
