Ilam Prison; An Additional 13 Years and 6 Months of Imprisonment for Four Kurdish Political Prisoners

00:00 - 28 October 2025

October 28, 2025; The Criminal Court of Ilam Province has sentenced four Kurdish political prisoners from Abdanan named Vahid Chaveran, Nasser Rezaei, Mohammadamin Danyalipour, and Mohammad Hossein Haseli in a new case to a total of 13 years and 6 months of executory imprisonment and cash fines on charges of "disturbing public order, assembly and collusion against internal and external security, and possession of weapons." These individuals also hold heavy sentences in the Revolutionary Court.

According to the verdict issued by this court, a copy of which was provided to Kurdpa; this verdict was issued on October 21, 2025, by Branch Two of the Criminal Court One of Ilam Province, presided over by Judge "Masoud Kargar" and Counselor "Adel Bazyar." Based on the issued verdict, each of:

Mohammad Hossein Haseli, 22 years old, son of Ali Hossein and from Abdanan, who has been in detention since July 27, 2023, due to inability to post bail, has been sentenced to one year of executory imprisonment for "intentional assault against an officer of the Abdanan police station," six months of executory imprisonment for "possession of a hunting weapon," payment of one hundred million Rials in cash fines for "destruction of a Law Enforcement Force vehicle," and payment of Diyah and Arsh for injury (4% of a full Diyah).

Vahid Chaveran, 32 years old, son of Yavar and from Abdanan, who has been in detention since June 25, 2023, has been sentenced to five years of executory imprisonment on the charge of "possession of a weapon." In this court verdict, his affliction "with borderline and anti-social personality disorders" is mentioned.

Nasser Rezaei, 44 years old, son of Sadegh and from Abdanan, who was in detention from May 23 to August 13, 2023, and after temporary release on bail, was re-arrested on August 12, 2024, has been sentenced to five years of executory imprisonment on the charge of "possession of a handgun." In this court verdict, his affliction "with borderline and anti-social personality disorders" is mentioned.

Mohammadamin Danyalipour, 25 years old, son of Nourmohammad and from Abdanan, has also been sentenced to two years of executory imprisonment due to "possession of 21 rounds of 9mm military ammunition." In his case, signs of "anti-social personality disorder" are also mentioned.

It should be noted that these individuals were deprived of the right to access a lawyer throughout their entire period of detention and interrogation, and after the end of the detention and the process of handling the charges in court, they were unable to hire a chosen lawyer; therefore, the court, according to Article 48 of the Criminal Procedure Code, hired a court-appointed lawyer for them, whose name in the court document for these four prisoners is stated as "Mehdi Mehri."

In its ruling, the court, citing the note to Article 2 of the Law for Reducing Executory Imprisonment Sentences and due to "the defendants' participation in illegal gatherings, shooting at officers, and disturbing public security," set their punishment higher than the legal minimum. Also, based on the indictment issued by the General and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office of Dehloran on August 18, 2024, it was based on the file of two plaintiffs' complaints and the report of the Intelligence Administration.

According to an informed source to Kurdpa; these political prisoners were forced into forced confessions under severe physical and mental torture during their detention. Nevertheless, the court in its ruling considered the defendants' confessions before the bailiffs as evidence to prove the crime under the title of "Eghrar" (confession).

In part of the court's ruling, the four convicted prisoners received an acquittal verdict regarding some charges, including "attempting premeditated murder, brandishing a weapon, part of the disturbance of public order, destruction of public property, and carrying a knife and brass knuckles." Additionally, five other defendants in the case, including "Hossein Ashouri," "Farshad Aeini," "Azim Yadegari," "Saadollah Aeini," and "Bakhtiar Mohammadzadeh," were also acquitted of all charges. Based on the court's reasoning, the reason for the acquittal of the four prisoners was mentioned as "insufficient evidence, contradictory statements of the defendants, and the prior handling of some crimes in the Revolutionary Court."

On May 4, 2025, Kurdpa published; three Kurdish political prisoners from Abdanan, Vahid Chaveran, Nasser Rezaei, and Mohammad Hossein Haseli, who were previously sentenced to 12 years of executory imprisonment each in connection with the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising, were exiled to the prisons of Zahedan, Kerman, and Mashhad after arbitrary arrests in May to August 2023 and spending more than eight months in Ilam Central Prison.

Mohammad Danyali, a Kurdish political prisoner and civil activist of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising and a member of the "Benar Abdanan" mountaineering group, from Abdanan, who was arrested on May 14, 2023, by security forces in Dehloran and released after 60 days upon posting bail, was transferred to Ilam Central Prison on March 15, 2025, to serve a two-year executory imprisonment sentence. This 24-year-old activist has gone on a hunger strike during his initial detention and now in protest against the inhumane conditions of maintenance, deprivation of access to a lawyer and family visits, and the worsening of his mental and psychological state.
