Ilam Central Prison: Hunger Strike by Mohammad Daniali Over Prison Conditions

On Sunday, May 3, 2025, Mohammad Daniali, a Kurdish political prisoner affiliated with the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom) uprising and currently held at Ilam Central Prison, began a hunger strike in protest of his deteriorating mental health and the inhumane and unjust conditions of his detention.
According to a source speaking to Kurdpa, Daniali, a 24-year-old civil and cultural activist from Abdanan and a member of the "Benar Abdanan" mountaineering group, initiated the hunger strike today. His action comes in direct response to his conditions of imprisonment and his severely declining mental health. He had previously undertaken two hunger strikes during earlier periods of interrogation and arbitrary detention.
On Saturday, March 15, 2025, Mohammad Daniali was transferred to Ilam Central Prison to begin serving a two-year discretionary prison sentence. He had previously been sentenced on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security” and “committing a social offense”, with time served during earlier detention counted toward the sentence.
Daniali, a native of Abdanan, was arrested by security forces on May 14, 2023, in the city of Dehloran, and after 60 days in detention, was temporarily released from Ilam’s central detention center on bail of 5 billion tomans.
During his initial detention, he experienced humiliating treatment by security forces, including forced head shaving, verbal abuse, and lack of due process. He also endured two hunger strikes during that period in protest. Moreover, he was denied access to a lawyer and visitation rights with his family.
Daniali’s latest hunger strike has raised serious concerns about his physical and mental health. The lack of fair trial, inhumane treatment of detainees, and restrictions on contact with family and legal counsel are among the frequent human rights violations in the judicial processes of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
