Family problems, social impasses and state sanctioned gender discrimination in the Kurdish areas of Iran are the leading cause of high suicide rate among girls

Kurdpa: A 17-year old Kurdish girl from the village of ‘Dastan’ in the county of ‘Shepiran’ in the vicinity of ‘Salmas’ city in West-Azerbijan province ended her own life following harassment and physical abuse by her father.

Kurdpa News Agency reporter identified the girl as ‘Torkman’; she killed herself with a hunting rifle after her father prevented her from going outside of her home with make-up.

According to a study by a Baneh women’s organization, self-immolation is the most common method of suicide in the Kurdish provinces of Ilam, Kirmanshah and Kurdistan.

Data complied by Kurdpa shows since the beginning of the Iranian New Year, 14 Kurds have died committing suicide for various reasons.

Society’s religious and traditional structure, high rate of illiteracy, patriarchal rule, unemployment and poverty are the leading cause of suicide and self-immolation in Kurdistan and Iran.

The Iranian state’s strict restrictions on girls’ and women’s public behaviour and dress in public sphere have also exacerbated discriminatory behaviour on women within the family as well.
