US State Department calls on Iran to release Kaboudvand and 90 other journalists+video

KURDPA: US State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland called upon the Iranian Government to release Kaboudvand and the some 90 other journalist it’s currently holding in Iranian prisons.

 
Under the US State Department’s “Free the Press Campaign” which is going on until May 3rd, a number of prominent imprisoned journalists around the world are being highlighted in the department’s Daily Press Briefings.

 
On Thursday, April 26, Victoria Nuland, State Department’s spokesperson highlighted the case of Iranian Kurdish journalist and human rights activist Mohammad Seddigh Kaboudvand who has been imprisoned since July 2007.

 
State department spokeswoman stated: “Today’s journalist is the case of Iranian journalist, Mohammad Seddigh Kaboudvand, who’s been held in Evin prison since July 2007. Kaboudvand was reporting on torture in Iranian prisons and now finds himself in one himself, and also on human rights abuses against Iranian Kurds. In 2008, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for acting against national security and engaging in propaganda against the state.”
 

Furthermore, she called upon “the Iranian Government to release Kaboudvand and the some 90 other journalist it’s currently holding in Iranian prisons.”

 
As part of the campaign, Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen, Cuban Blogger Yoani Sanchez, Uzbek Journalist Dilmurod Sayid and Eritrean Journalist Dawit Isaak have so far been announced.

 
The initiative is US State Department’s efforts in the walk-up to May 3rd UNESCO World Press Freedom Day that every day between April 20th and May 3rd, an individual human rights case will be highlighted in the department’s Daily Press Briefings and on humanrights.gov website.
