Three Weeks after Public Protests in Mahabad, the Fate of a Teenage Girl is Uncertain

Kurdpa: Three weeks after the public protest in Mahabad, and other Kurdish cities in Iran, the fate of a 17 year-old girl is still unknown.

Kurdistan News Agency, Kurdpa, has learned that a female student has been missing since the unrest began in Mahabad on May 7, 2015.

“Laleh Khoshnud was only a student and she did not participate in the public protest in Mahabad”, a family friend of Khoshnud told Kurdpa during a telephone interview.

Khoshnud’s family stated that the school she was attending is in the same direction as Hotel Tara, where the protest took place. She was taking this route on her way to her school.

Khoshnud’s family has approached all officials, including judiciary and security offices; however, they have received no response as far as their daughter’s whereabouts are concerned.

The family has presumed that she might have been arrested by security officials after recent public unrest in Mahabad.

Khoshnud’s family also told Kurdpa that they are extremely anxious about her fate, and the lack of action taken by officials has further escalated their concerns.

Since her disappearance, some Kurdish civil activists have addressed a letter to the Iranian Majlis, appealing for help in finding the missing girl.

Following the suspicious death of Farinaz Khosrowani, a hotel chambermaid in Mahabad, a day of public protest took place in the city. The protesters demanded the arrest of the perpetrators of this crime, as well as, justice for Khosrowani.

The protesters faced heavy-handed treatment by the Special Forces, which led to the arrests of dozens by the intelligence agents.

Khosrowani, a 25 year old computer engineering graduate, was an employee at Hotel Tara and reports confirm that she killed herself to preserve her ‘honour’ and avoid rape by the hands of a government stooge.
