RMMK: We Demand the Release of Founding Father of Human Rights

03:03 - 3 July 2015
Kurdpa: Human Rights Organization of Kurdistan released a statement on the 8th anniversary of Mohammad Sadigh Kaboudvand, a prominent Kurdish human rights activist.

In a statement, a copy of which also sent to Kurdpa, Kurdistan Human Rights Organization demanded freedom for Kaboudvand, the founding father of human rights activism in Eastern Kurdistan.

This human rights organization, in coordination with Kaboudvand’s family, appealed to civil and political activists, human rights organizations and the broader international community to express their discontent in prolonging Kaboudvand’s imprisonment and unflinchingly demand his freedom.

“Kaboudvand has been unjustly and unfairly imprisoned in defence of the human rights and the national rights of nation groups and the people of Iran and has been deprived from his activism for 100 months”,the statement read.

In a press statement in July 2012, the US Department of State spokesperson called on Iran to release “all political prisoners”, but expressed particular concern for two journalists currently serving sentences for their human rights stances who are reported to be in ill-health.

We are concerned by recent reports that Kurdish activist Kaboudvand and human rights defender Narges Mohammadi are suffering from rapidly deteriorating health while in prison\", said the statement.
Kurdish-Iranian Kaboudvand, 50, is also being held in the notorious Evin, where many political dissidents continue to be held and where many are believed to have been subjected to torture following the country\'s massive 2009 anti-government uprisings.

He is the former editor of Payam-e Mardon, and the founder of Kurdistan Human Rights Organization;he was named “International Journalist of the Year” at the British Press Awards in 2009.

Kaboudvand has been in custody since June 2007, and he is serving an 11-year prison term. He has been kept in solitary confinement for 5 months in spite of having suffered a stroke while in custody.
