Kurdpa - More than 58.9% of runaway girls say the main reason they left home was the generation gap between them and their parents, while 16% said they did so after beginning clandestine relationships

To the alarm of Iran’s social work agencies, most runaway girls are now in the 14 to 16 age group. Furthermore, it has been estimated that the number of girls leaving home for the major cities has increased by up to 20% a year in recent times. According to the Fararu news website, sociologist Dr. Mehdi Zayir blames the increase on high levels of divorce, poverty, unemployment and domestic violence.

More than 58.9% of runaway girls say the main reason they left home was the generation gap between them and their parents, while 16% said they did so after beginning clandestine relationships. A combination of the dire economic situation of their families and parental divorce was responsible for 5.12% of cases, and 7% said they left home after being lured into vice.

Sociologist Ahmad Foladian told Fararu that most runaway girls are highly vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases and drug abuse, and often suffer from depression and malnutrition.
