Khalil Bahramian: The Execution of "Sherko Moarefi" is not unexpected.

KURDPA – Sherko Moarefi\'s lawyer said that his client is in the imminent danger of execution.

\"I have genuine fear that he might be executed at any time. This delay does not mean that his sentence has been halted,\" Bahramian told the KURDPA in a phone conversation.

He told this agency though no statements have been received regarding with his execution so far but since the Supreme Court has upheld the verdict, he is in the face of imminent execution.

He maintained that the implementation date of such executions won\'t be announced to the lawyers and the prisoner only will be informed of that. This process is against the existing law and such verdicts must be announced to the lawyers.

\"Sherko Moarefi\", a Kurdish political prisoner, from Bana (located in Kurdistan province, western of Iran) aged 31, was sentenced to death by a branch of Revolutionary Court in Saghez after being convicted of \"acting against the national security\" and moharebeh (waging war against God) – vague charges that Iran has used against many political activists in recent years.

His family members have sent letters to the International and Human rights Organizations in order to assist them to abolish his death penalty.

He was arrested in October 2008 on suspicion of being a member of a Kurdish opposition political party.
Iran has launched a campaign against Kurdish political activists. At least 15 other imprisoned Kurdish activists are on death row.

Iran is the leading jailer of journalists, along with China, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists. At least 34 journalists are in prison in Iran.
