Death of Approximately 2000 Kurdish Citizens Due to Landmine Explosion

Kurdpa Agency: After the end of Iran-Iraq war twenty four years ago, the rate of victims in the region including of five provinces of Iran where landmine had been planted are almost 8034 citizens.

According to Kurdistan Press Agency, from 1988 until 2011 in the province of Western Azerbaijan, Ilam, Kermanshah, Kurdistan and Khuzestan, 2433 civilians died due to abandoned weapon and landmine explosions. Also, during this period of time, 5601 people were injured. Herana Press in a report has described the rate of victims during those 24 years as a disaster.

In the province of Eastern Kurdistan, the rate of landmine victims is concerning, and during the aforementioned period, 1966 Kurdish Citizens lost their lives in the region where were involved in the planted landmine and abandoned weapons . On the other hand, 4727 citizens were wounded in Kurdistan because of landmine explosion.

According to Harana press report Women have been victimized by landmine explosion. In Ilam, Western Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and Kermanshah, 158 women have lost their lives and another 402 have been injured due to landmine explosions.

Within the above four province, Kermanshah has the highest rate of death tool by 993 cases. Kurdistan 368 cases, Ilam 326 cases, and Western Azerbaijan by 309 cases of landmine death respectively are in second, third and fourth stages.

It is said that landmines have been planted within more than 2,200,000 hectors of Kurdistan. In Kurdistan and Western Azerbaijan, the place of the landmines has located close to the citizens’ residence.

According to the recent news, , more than 42 thousands square kilometers of Iranian territory have currently been planted by landmine and other defused weapons left over from Iran-Iraq eight years war.
