A Military Base in Rabat Set Ablaze

Kurdpa: An old Revolutionary Guards base was set on fire in the Kurdish city of Rabat in Wurme (West Azerbijan) province by unidentified assailants.

Kurdpa has learned that an old Iranian IRGC base near the city of Rabat in the East Kurdistan province of Wurme was destroyed on August 21. The base, which had been named Tabatabai Guards’ Base, was set ablaze by unidentified attackers.

According to local residents, who spoke to Kurdpa on the condition of anonymity, there were no fatalities in the fire; however the habitat surrounding the base were damaged extensively.

According to the information available, firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames. A number of IRGC members were also present when the fire was contained.

An eye-witness told Kurdpa that there has been a surge of military activities in and around Rabat and the adjacent city of Sardasht closer to the border with South Kurdistan.

There are also reports that IRGC forces in Kurdistan are renovating old army barracks.

Following a resurgence in armed Kurdish opposition activities in the Kurdish areas, Iran has been carrying out a new wave of military build-up in East Kurdistan, massing troops on the border with South Kurdistan and deploying heavy weaponry to cross-border regions.

In recent weeks, the Iranian military set out to create a “security zone” covering 25 kilometers close to cities of Sardasht and Shino. Kurdpa has learned that the Iranian regime intends to build similar zones in other parts of East Kurdistan, encompassing 150 kilometers.

The destruction of the Tabatabai IRGC Base, as well as the massing of Iranian troops on the border with South Kurdistan, come at a time when the Iranian Kurdish Peshmerga Forces, including the PDKI, have repositioned around the border region between South and East Kurdistan. PDKI leadership is claiming they are ready to re-start an armed struggle against the regime of Islamic Republic of Iran.
Several clashes have been reported between IRGC and Iranian Kurdish fighters. IRGC and other regime media have said little publicly about the clashes.

On August 9, a local member of IRGC was shot dead following an ambush on dozens of IRGC members by unidentified gunmen. Kurdpa had identified the dead IRGC member as Tijir Mozdgir.

In another attack in June 9, six local members of IRGC, infamously known as Jash in Kurdish, were killed in the suburbs of the city of Kamiyaran in Sina Province of East Kurdistan.

Similar clashes in the city of Sardasht also led to the death of at least five members of Iran’s IRGC forces.

Founded after the Iranian revolution in 1979, the IRGC’s main role, according to the Iranian regime constitution, is to protect the Islamic system and to prevent foreign interference, as well as coups by the military, uprising and resistance movements.

Kurds in Iran, among other oppressed nationalities, are of prime concern to the regime of Islamic Republic of Iran, making the areas belonging to nationalities prime targets for IRGC forces.
