Bukan; The death sentences of two Jin, Jiyan, Azadi political prisoners were confirmed by the Supreme Court Mohammad Faraji and Raouf Sheikh-Maroufi
May 29, 2026; During the past days, the death sentences of two Kurdish political prisoners from Bukan and among the detainees of the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi revolutionary uprising, named "Raouf Sheikh-Maroufi" and "Mohammad Faraji", were confirmed by the Supreme Court, and these two prisoners are under serious danger of the execution of the death sentence. Previously, their death sentences had been issued twice by the Revolutionary Courts of Mahabad and Miandoab, and have now been confirmed by the Supreme Court.
An informed source, while confirming this news, told Kurdpa; during the past days and probably in May or June 2026, the death sentences of "Raouf Sheikh-Maroufi" and "Mohammad Faraji" have been confirmed by the Supreme Court. The death sentences of these two prisoners were first issued in February or March 2026 by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad, but after being overturned by the Supreme Court, the case was referred to one of the branches of the Revolutionary Court of West Azerbaijan province in Miandoab. Subsequently, the Revolutionary Court of Miandoab issued their death sentences once again, and this sentence has now been confirmed by the Supreme Court and sent to the Sentence Enforcement Branch. Accordingly, there is a serious danger of the execution of the death sentence of these two Kurdish political prisoners.
These two Kurdish political prisoners are currently being held in the prison of Bukan, and their families are deeply concerned about the imminent execution of their death sentences.
"Raouf Sheikh-Maroufi" was arrested on December 26, 2022, and "Mohammad Faraji" on February 22, 2023, by security forces without presenting a judicial warrant and were transferred to the detention center of the Intelligence Department of Urmia for interrogation. Kurdpa published from the very beginning that security forces subjected them to severe physical and psychological torture to extract forced confessions and force them to accept the charge of "participation in the murder of one of the security forces" in Bukan. These two prisoners were subsequently transferred from the detention center of the Intelligence Department of Urmia to the prison of Bukan on June 10, 2023, following the completion of the interrogation phases.
On January 13, 2025, Kurdpa reported that "Raouf Sheikh-Maroufi" and "Mohammad Faraji" were faced with the charge of "corruption on Earth" (Efsad-e Fel-Arz) and threatened with the issuance of the death sentence without access to a lawyer of their choice. These two political prisoners had been deprived of access to a lawyer of their choice during the entire period of nearly one year. Also, neither they themselves nor their families had any information about the identity of the public defenders of the case, and the families had been told that meeting with the public defenders was possible only at the time of the court sessions.
Also, during more than three years of detention of these two prisoners and throughout the process of handling the case and issuing the death sentence, the security and judicial agencies have prevented their temporary release and the acceptance of bail for their release.
In February or March 2026, "Raouf Sheikh-Maroufi" and "Mohammad Faraji" were sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad on charges of "moharebeh" (enmity against God) and "corruption on Earth". These two prisoners had been tried separately in Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad during the months prior to the issuance of the sentence, and the issued sentences were officially communicated to them in the prison of Bukan on February 24, 2026.
