October 24, 2026; On Saturday, October 24, 2026, Mona Dabbagh, a young Kurdish woman and English language teacher in Sanandaj, was transferred to the Juvenile Correction and Rehabilitation Center (Sanandaj Women's Ward) to serve a 3-year and 6-month discretionary imprisonment sentence issued against her in recent months on security charges by the Revolutionary Court.
Posting on her Instagram page, the English teacher wrote: "Today, the ten-day deadline set by the court for me to report to sentence enforcement expires, and I am heading to Sanandaj Women's Prison. The request for the application of Article 477 also yielded no results."
She further stated: "On charges of 'propaganda activity in furtherance of strengthening the Zionist regime,' I have been sentenced to three years and six months of discretionary imprisonment, and on charges of 'propaganda and collusion against the system,' to one year of discretionary imprisonment. The total sentences issued amount to four years and six months, but due to multiple charges, in accordance with the issued verdict, the maximum penalty—namely three years and six months of imprisonment—will be executed."
Referring to her four-year-old daughter, Mona Dabbagh wrote: "Today, I must entrust my beloved four-year-old daughter to life and walk into prison on my own feet. I have to tear myself away from her small embrace and spend days far from her laughter, games, and breath. I am going to prison, but my heart—the whole of me—remains beside my daughter with every moment and every breath."
On April 29, 2026, this English language teacher was arbitrarily arrested without a judicial warrant at her workplace by security forces and subsequently transferred to the Sanandaj Correction and Rehabilitation Center; she was released on bail 12 days later.
Following a court hearing and the issuance of a preliminary verdict by Branch 1 of the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court, Ms. Dabbagh's case was referred to the Court of Appeals. On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Branch 4 of the Kurdistan Province Court of Appeals sentenced her to 3 years and 6 months of discretionary imprisonment on charges of "propaganda activity in furtherance of strengthening the Zionist regime" and to one year of discretionary imprisonment on charges of "propaganda activity against the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran," deeming the maximum penalty applicable.
Following the Court of Appeals verdict, the English teacher emphasized: "I have not accepted this ruling, and I plan to pursue action against it through the Supreme Court."
